An architect, educational planner and Principal at SMMA in Cambridge, Mr. Poinelli has over 48 years’ experience in the programming, design, and execution of projects for education, science, and research.
Mr. Poinelli was instrumental in the development of the firm's K-12 Studio, and currently leads SMMA's educational planning initiatives influencing most all of SMMA's K-12 public and private school projects. Phil is passionate about educational planning; collaborating, assessing, and working with dedicated professionals, nationally and internationally, developing ideas for planning, programming and design of innovative and creative learning environments that not only support, but enhance educational delivery pedagogy.
Recently, Phil was the lead educational planner for the City of Boston’s 127 School District Master Plan, BuildBPS.
He has been professionally recognized by election to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects (2012) and, most recently in 2018, was recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association for Learning Environments (A4LE). He is a writer, speaker and researcher on educational planning and places.
