Project Impact:
Through a Reimagine America's Schools' design workshop and series of community visioning sessions, Spokane district leaders committed to creating a new vision for public schools in their community.

In February 2019, three RAS Design Teams tested facility design principles on the designs for three replacement middle schools. This work would also influence the design of an additional three new middle schools that were part of a $521 million bond initiative approved by the community with a 2018 referendum.

Along with other funds, the expenditure of $553 million in construction funds was the most significant investment in a national school design initiative on a per-student basis for 2019. Challenged to re-imagine Spokane middle schools, parents, students, teachers, and community members worked with RAS's nationally-acclaimed educational design experts. The teams presented their work, which included an impressive collection of insight, experience, and creativity as they thought about promoting connectivity, flexibility, and collaboration.

In October 2019, the district broke ground on the first replacement middle school, breathing life into concepts first created by design teams in the RAS charrettes.
